F-Spot, A photo album

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

This program lets you tag your photos, and export to online galleries, can make a gallery and it can write to cd.

A very nice app for viewing and sharing your photos with others.

To install in Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake):

Make sure you have multiverse and universe repositories added.

Console:

  • sudo apt-get install f-spot

Gui:

It’ll be under graphics as f-spot

To make GNOME import your photos when you plug your Camera in:

Navigate the menus – System > Preferences > Removable Drives and Media > Cameras

Make sure Import Digital Photographs is ticked and change Command to:

  • f-spot-import %h

nfs support

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

gnome should support auto mounting nfs, and have options for that gnome-volume-manager
should be the same as any mass storage device.
and in nautilus: show nfs shares
to add them to the desktop,
default to be under network.

lack of autodetection for gnome-screensaver in ubuntu

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

i started up the ubuntu dapper live cd on my grandfather’s computer, played with it awhile and wondered off to do something else.

when i returned it was struggling to display a opengl screensaver because the default option was set to random.

now. if you have onboard graphics which arent intel, you probably can run them well.
if you have nvidia or ati, you most likely dont have the drivers installed because ubuntu doesnt install them by default.

not being able to run these screensavers from a fully functional graphics card which is moderately powerful (i still get highish cpu usage with my laptop which has a intel 900 graphics adapter) your cpu is gonna be used
and its gonna get hot.

heat can easily kill off a computer if its a cheap motherboard without overheat shutdown.
or in a hot area already.

the next version of ubuntu is a month off, we will see how that is.
